Anchorage School District
Recycling Pilot Project 2005-2006

"WASTE SORT"

As part of the School Recycling Pilot Project, students conducted a waste sort of one day's trash and recyclables at one high school. The sort is designed:

  • To identify how much waste is generated each day in the school.
  • To extrapolate how much waste is generated on a monthly/yearly basis.
  • To identify how much of this waste is currently recycled.
  • To determine how much of the waste stream could be recycled.
  • To determine what other materials beyond mixed paper and cardboard could effectively be recycled.
  • To determine a baseline with which to measure success over the next year in waste prevention and recycling activities.
  • To highlight/publicize the school’s recycling efforts.
  • To have fun.

On October 21, 2005, about 30 students from several area high schools and universities gathered at West High to sort trash.

Students sorted almost a half ton of waste generated in one day at West High School.
The sort line -- about 30 students from several different high schools helped sort.
Students found lots of food and drink packaging in their trash, as well as lots of food and drink!
