State Fair Recycling 2005
This year was the fourth year that recycling was an integrated part of the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. Green Star, Valley Community for Recycling Solutions, and the Alaska State Fair teamed with sponsors and volunteers to make recycling better than ever at the Fair! Results This year, we recycled 48,950 pounds of material. That's almost 25 tons and its about 8 tons more than was collected the previous year. Our four year total diversion is 71.25 tons.
About 235 volunteers helped to recycle for twelve days during the fair (Aug 25 - Sept 5) as well as for several days before and after, as vendors set up and broke down. The volunteers collected recyclables (cans and bottles) from the numerous recycling bins scattered throughout the fairgrounds, transported them back to the Recycling Sorting Area, and sorted them from any trash into large recycling dumpsters and roll-offs. Volunteers also collected cardboard from the fair vendors and bring it back to the cardboard roll-off at the Recycling Sorting Area. Special Thank You's Thank you to the sponsors and volunteer groups who participated.
Thank you to Kathleen Asay and Carole Henry, volunteers who were at the Fair every day collecting cardboard from vendors. Thank you to Judith Andregg, David Pelto, and Kate Fitzgerald, this year's State Fair Recycling Staff members. We hope to see them again in 2005! Special Prizes and Awards Each year, Green Star, VCRS, and the Alaska State Fair awards several prizes to those organizations who demonstrated a strong recycling ethic. These vendors and volunteers displayed extra effort in their recycling activities and helped to make recycling easier and more successful. This year's winners are:
