Green Star Schools
Anchorage School District
Recycling Pilot Project 2005-2006

"One School At A Time"

In fall 2004, Green Star applied for a Recycling Grant from the Municipality of Anchorage. The grants are available to businesses and organizations who implement innovative recycling initiatives or develop and disseminate recycling education and outreach. The funds are made available through a diversion of $1/revenue ton of waste tipped at the Anchorage Regional Landfill.

In spring 2005, Green Star received a grant to work with schools in an effort to demonstrate that an integrated recycling program is cost effective in the schools. The project is a two-year endeavor to gather accurate information on waste and recyclable material generaton within selected schools and document the cost savings that can be achieved through a reduction in waste generation and hauling expenses. The results of the project will be presented to the Anchorage School District.

Currently, numerous schools with the district have varying levels of recycling. Each school must implement and pay for these programs within the individual schools. Often parent volunteers, students, and teachers are responsible for the collection and transportation aspects of the program, as well as acquiring bins, posting signs, and educating the participants.

Through this pilot program, several schools will work closely with Green Star, with the help of Alaska Youth for Evironmental Action, to develop and maintain a successful recycling program. This will include:

  • Conducting a baseline waste sort at one school.
  • Equipping all classrooms and other paper-generating areas of the school with recycling bins for mixed paper.
  • Working with the waste hauler to install recycling dumpsters for mixed paper and cardboard.
  • Developing a system to move recyclables to the dumpsters.
  • Publicizing the program and educating fellow students, teachers, and staff.
  • Tracking the quantities recycling collected and tracking the labor involved in collecting materials.
  • Identifying waste prevention activities that might affect waste quantities.
  • Conducting a final waste sort at the same school one year later to document the successes of the program put in place.
  • Developing a report for the school district that illustrates the program's success with data and case studies.
  • Presenting the information to the school district.
