Green Star Programs

The Green Star Award
The Green Star Award is the original award on which the Green Star program was based. It is given to businesses, organizations, schools, and agencies that demonstrate a strong environmental and business ethic by implementing the eight Green Star Standards. These Standards encourage waste reduction within several media, as well as education and outreach. Examples of Standards topics include recycling, waste prevention, improved purchasing, outreach to other organizations, education of employees, reduction of toxic materials, water conservation, and energy efficiency.

In 2008, the Air Quality Award, unveiled in 2000, is combined with the Green Star Award, adding two air quality-related Standards to the the Award.

Green Events
Green Events is an assistance program designed to make public event recycling more accessible. The program targets recycling as well as waste prevention activities. Recycling bins are available for use and technical assisstance is provided for setting up a successful temporary recycling program.

Site Assessments
The Site Assessment program is designed to support the Award programs by providing individual assistance to organizations. Green Star staff are available to visit enrollee facilities to identify current positive practices, potential improvements, and resources.

Green Schools
The Green Schools program has several components. The specialized Schools version of the Green Star Standards are available with specific examples focusing on schools. Green Star staff often make presentations to elementary and middle school students about recycling. In addition, a pilot project is underway to incorporate a comprehsive recycling program into a local high school's current waste management system. This two-year grant project is intended to demonstrate successful school recycling and encourage an expanded district-wide recycling program.

Lighting Energy Efficiency Pledge (L.E.E.P.) Campaign
L.E.E.P. is a two-year program designed to encourage businesses and organizations to reduce their energy use through lighting upgrades and retrofits. Businesses sign a pledge to make specific changes including switching from T-12 fluorescent lamps to T-8 lamps, switching from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and/or changing out incandescent bulb exit signs for LED exit signs. Based on the number of lights that the organization pledges to change, calculations of the energy and cost savings, as well as carbon emissions reduction figures, are provided to the organization. Technical assistance is provided to ensure that the retrofit can be completed. Both building/business owners and renters are encouraged to participate.

REAP (Renewable Energy Alaska Project)
REAP is a coalition of small and large electric utilities, environmental groups, consumer groups, businesses and Alaska Native interests. It was formed in 2004 to facilitate the increased development of renewable energy in Alaska. By October 2006, REAP will be its own nonprofit entity but until then, it remains under the umbrella of Green Star. REAP's mission is to advocate for the construction of viable renewable energy projects in Alaska; to help develop and implement positive renewable energy policies; to build a market for renewable energy; and to promote energy efficiency.
