Green Stars newest program Green Events recently won ALPARs Board of Directors Award. Green Star is an Anchorage-based nonprofit organization dedicated to rewarding businesses and organizations for their waste reduction, pollution prevention, and energy conservation efforts. Green Stars Green Events program helps event planners and facilities throughout Anchorage to reduce their environmental impact through recycling and waste prevention.
The Green Events program was recognized at the Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) annual meeting and awards banquet held on May 23, 2001 at the Kincaid Park Chalet. ALPAR and Green Star work closely together to promote recycling throughout the State. Green Star greatly appreciates receiving recognition from a peer organization in the community.
The Green Events program offers planners and facility managers free use of recycling bins and signs. It also provides a list of volunteers and all the additional recycling supplies, outreach materials, and technical assistance needed to help make the recycling program run smoothly.
Green Events began assisting event planners in February 2001 and has certified more than twenty events as Green Events since that time. The program has diverted more than 11 tons of recyclables from disposal in the landfill.
