GLASS RECYCLING EXPANDS IN ANCHORAGE
Anchorage residents and small businesses now have three more places to take glass for recycling. Through Green Stars Citywide Glass Recycling Program, public drop-off bins for glass bottles and jars are now located at Northway Mall, Fairview Recreation Center, and Spenard Recreation Center. These drive-up bins are accessible 24 hours a day. Managers at the three facilities have generously donated space in their parking lots for the public drop-off bins.
Green Star is a non-profit environmental organization in Anchorage dedicated to recognizing organizations for their waste prevention efforts. The Glass Recycling Program, funded through grants from the Municipality of Anchorages Solid Waste Services and the Alaska Science and Technology Foundation, helps organizations meet their waste reduction goals by making recycling easier and more convenient. The program also helps to increase the quantity of glass diverted from the landfill by making glass recycling more convenient for businesses and residents.
Current glass drop-off sites in Anchorage are located at:
Anchorage Recycling Center, 6161 Rosewood Street
The Home Depot, 515 E.Tudor Road
Northway Mall, 3101 Penland Parkway, near Safeway
Fairveiw Recreation Center, 1121 E. 10th Avenue
Spenard Recreation Center, 2020 W. 48th Avenue
In addition to assisting public recycling, Green Star has helped several businesses to establish a formal glass-recycling program within their facilities. To date, more than a dozen businesses, mostly bars and restaurants, in Anchorage have implemented a glass-recycling program. Current glass recyclers include Benihana, Chilkoot Charlies, the Fly By Night Club, Glacier Brewhouse and Ristorante Orso, Dark Horse Coffee, West Coast International Inn, Hot Rods, Kaladi Bros., all three La Mex locations, the Sheraton Anchorage, and the Sourdough Mining Company. In addition, several plate glass companies, including Capitol Glass and Trans America Glass, recycle waste glass.
Any businesses generating waste glass that are interested in participating in the program can contact Green Stars Recycling Program Coordinator at 278-7839 for more information.
