ANCHORAGE, Alaska- Green Star will be hosting an electronics recycling event to provide businesses with a convenient and affordable means of recycling old electronics. The event will be held between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on Friday, May 9, 2003 at 901 E. Dimond Blvd. (former Carrs store, corner of Dimond and Old Seward).
Most monitors, electronic devices, and media will be accepted, including, but not limited to, monitors, TVs, computers, fax machines, photocopiers, printers, radios, VCRs, phones, electronic games, tapes, CDs, DVDs, and floppy disks. Household appliances, smoke detectors, loose batteries, and other electronics without circuit boars will not be accepted.
For businesses, there will be a cost of $15 per monitor or TV and 30¢ per pound for all other electronics. Acceptable payment methods include cash, Visa, Mastercard, and checks payable to Green Star.
All material collected at the event will be sent to a recycler in the Lower 48, where more than 95 percent of the material will be recycled into new products. Initial estimates indicate that the event will collect approximately 175,000 pounds of electronics, which will fill at least five trailers.
This event is made possible by the generous support of BP, a major grant from Anchorage Solid Waste Services, and donated services from TOTE, Horizon Lines, Weaver Brothers, Carrs-Safeway, the Anchorage Daily News, Odom Corporation, Phillip Services Corporation, Anchorage Refuse and many other local businesses. These donations make it possible to recycle these materials at such a low cost.
The Anchorage Regional Landfill will not accept electronics for disposal from businesses generating more than a specified quantity of hazardous waste.
Volunteers and shopping carts will be available onsite to assist participating businesses with their loads. Free popcorn from the Alaska Corn Company also will be available to all who participate.
Anyone wishing to volunteer at the event is encouraged to contact Green Star at 278-7839 or Jeanne@greenstarinc.org. Four-hour shifts are available throughout the day.
A similar event for households will be held Saturday, May 10th. For more information about either event, please contact Green Star at 278-7827, email info@greenstarinc.org, or visit Green Stars web site at www.greenstarinc.org.
