Green Star presented Emerald Alaska, Inc. with the Green Star award today at the Chamber of Commerce Make It Monday forum at the 4th Avenue Theater.
Emerald Alaska completed more than the minimum 12 Green Star Standards required to earn the award. The company has made changes to make its business as environmentally sound as possible, thereby protecting not only the environment, but also its assets and customers.
Since Emerald Alaska is an environmental services company that provides recycling and disposal services for used oil, antifreeze, solvents and other hazardous and non-hazardous materials, the positive impacts of their environmental management are great.
Other examples of Emeralds positive impacts include:
- Recycling about 42,000 pounds of cleaned and crushed steel drums and oil filters.
- Tank cleanings performed with a hot water pressure washer, not solvents. All residuals are captured for recovery.
- Reuse of all undamaged pallets.
- Composting of broken pallets.
- Recycling of all possible office waste streams, include office and mixed paper, aluminum cans, and toner cartridges.
- Installation of energy efficient T-8 fluorescent light fixtures and compact fluorescent lamps to save energy and money.
Emerald Alaska has a very efficient waste reduction system in place. Very little of the material that goes into the business comes out as waste. They exemplify a Green Star business.
