BP ENERGY CENTER AND NABORS ALASKA DRILLING
ACHIEVE GREEN STAR AWARD

Green Star presents the BP Energy Center and Nabors Alaska Drilling with the Green Star Award today at the Chamber of Commerce “Make It Monday” forum. Both businesses have worked hard to ensure their operations conform to the Green Star standards.

The BP Energy Center has been in the works for several years and opened its doors to the public just one week ago. The mission of the Energy Center is to give back to the community in the form of free meeting and training space for non-profit organizations and schools.

The Energy Center was designed to reduce its impact on the environment in several ways. Its construction was done in such a way that the surrounding trees were not disturbed and today the building is almost invisible from the street and parking lots. The building is designed to be energy efficient, with the newest lighting technologies, motion sensors, and an automated heating and cooling system. Designers also incorporated some sustainable building materials, such as renewable and sustainably harvested cork flooring.

New technologies also help to reduce waste. For example, Smart boards and Panaboards are used in conference spaces in place of traditional flip charts. Notes can be printed from a dry erase board or downloaded directly to a computer.

Recycling stations are set up in various places throughout the building and an environmental message is passed along to each group, along with the standard safety information at the beginning of each event.

The award presented to Nabors Alaska Drilling today recognizes its Anchorage area efforts, though many of its Health Safety and Environment programs run statewide.

Most impressive about Nabors’ application is its thorough environmental management program. All waste streams are managed and monitored very closely. By examining its waste streams, Nabors found that standardizing many of its material purchases reduced waste significantly.

Nabors also has generous incentive programs to encourage employees to provide feedback about any environmental or safety concern. Additionally, every work location has a “spill champion” who promotes environmental awareness and makes daily environmental inspections.

The Green Star awards will be presented at the Chamber of Commerce “Make It Monday” forum beginning at noon at the Fourth Avenue Theater.
