Rasmuson Foundation Grants $55K to Green Star

Green Star has received a $55,000 grant from the Rasmuson Foundation to aid 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations with the cost of recycling computers and electronics through Green Star’s Electronics Recycling Event. Green Star organized Anchorage’s first ever electronics recycling event in May of 2003, collecting and recycling more than 280,000 pounds of computers, TV’s, and electronics from organizations, businesses and households.

Jeff Clarke, the Foundation's Chief Administrative Officer, commented, "We are particularly pleased that Green Star took the initiative to address the critical issue of how to safely dispose of computer and electronics equipment here in Southcentral. It’s an issue facing organizations and communities across the country. The Foundation is happy to partner with Green Star and others to meet this challenge.”

The Rasmuson Foundation has, through this grant, shown its strong commitment to encouraging responsible electronics recycling by public charities. As a funder of much of the technology that runs Alaska’s non-profit organizations, the Foundation advocates a comprehensive lifecycle approach to determining the end-of-life disposal of equipment. The Rasmuson Foundation itself recycles responsibly, and encourages its non-profit grantees to do the same.

Anchorage’s first electronics recycling effort was successful due to a grant from Anchorage Solid Waste Services, funding from BP, and tremendous support from local businesses and volunteers. The event provided affordable electronics recycling to the community in an effort to raise public awareness, protect the environment, and recycle electronic components into new, usable products. The Rasmuson Foundation grant will enable qualified 501(c)(3) organizations to recycle at future Green Star Electronics Recycling events free of charge. The next event is tentatively planned for spring of 2004.
Green Star is a non-profit organization that encourages businesses and organizations to practice waste reduction, energy conservation, and pollution prevention through education, technical assistance, and a publicly recognized awards program.
