Green Star is presenting a team of students and teachers at Wonder Park Elementary School with the Green Star Award today at a Wonder Park school awards assembly. To earn the award, the school achieved at least 12 of the 18 Green Star Standards. These standards include such activities as forming a Green Star Team, starting a recycling program, providing incentives to encourage recycling and waste prevention in the school, reducing paper use, properly handling hazardous materials, and increasing energy efficiency, among other activities.
Wonder Park has a strong Green Team, made up of teachers, and an active Recycling Club, made up of sixth grade students. The students monitor the schools recycling bins and alert the Green Team when materials need to be transported to the recycling center. Recycling Club members wear an official team name tag when they are on official recycling business in the school to raise awareness about the recycling program.
Recycling and waste prevention have been strongly encouraged within the school through the inclusion of a recycling unit in curriculum, Earth Day celebrations, an essay contest, information in the parent newsletter, and continued discussions during staff meetings.
The Green Star award will be presented at an awards assembly at Wonder Park Elementary School beginning at 2pm, Wednesday, June 5, 2002. For more information about Green Star, contact Sean Skaling at (907) 278-7827 or email sean@greenstarinc.org. Visit Green Stars web site at www.greenstarinc.org.
