ELECTRONICS REUSE AND RECYCLING :
ELECTRONICS EXCHANGE NOW ONLINE AND
HOW-TO BUSINESS TRAINING SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 19TH

Green Star launched an Electronics Exchange on its web site this week as part of its Electronics Reuse and Recycling program. The Exchange allows anyone with usable electronics equipment to list it for donation. The site is searchable by the type of equipment and facilitates exchanges of equipment that would otherwise end up in the landfill. The Electronics Exchange can be accessed at www.greenstarinc.org.

For electronics that are no longer usable, Green Star offers a recycling alternative with drop-off days on May 9th (for businesses) and May 10th (for households). The drop-off days will be held at the recently closed Carrs Store on the corner of Dimond and Old Seward from 10am until 4pm on both Friday and Saturday.

Green Star encourages businesses and organizations interested in learning about the May 9th business electronics-recycling event to attend a workshop on Wednesday, March 19th, from 11:45am until 1pm. The workshop will be held at the BP Energy Center and will focus on the specifics of preparing computers and other electronics for the recycling drop-off day.

The workshop is free. Registration is required since space is limited. To register, please send an email to info@greenstarinc.org with the name of the organization, the representative’s name, email, and phone number. Phone registration may also be made at 278-7827.

At the workshop, Green Star staff and local computer experts will provide a detailed list of the items that will be accepted during the drop-off event and the fee structure. They also will explain how to prepare, package, palletize, and transport electronics for the drop-off day; and how to fill out the pre-registration forms to help planners determine expected quantities.

Presenters will explain the monetary and liability benefits of recycling electronics, based on each organization’s hazardous waste generator status. The recycling drop-off may be the most convenient and cost-effective management option for used computers for most businesses. Attendees also will learn about data destruction and security issues.

For more information about the exchange, the workshop, or the recycling drop-off days, please contact Sean Skaling at 907-278-7827 or sean@greenstarinc.org. Visit www.greenstarinc.org for more details and updates about the electronics-recycling program.
