GLASS RECYCLING

Glass can be a large portion of the waste stream for some types of businesses. Restaurants, bars, hotels, and convention and tourism facilities often generate large quantities of glass food and beverage containers. In addition, plate glass companies generate scrap and broken plate glass generated during the manufacturing and installation process. Discarding this waste stream can cost businesses thousands of dollars each year. By recycling this waste glass, businesses can reduce their disposal costs and create a more efficient operation. Through the glass recycling program, Green Star was able to offer several incentives to businesses, including:

  • Several months of glass pick-up service from Anchorage Refuse
  • Indoor collection bins
  • Labels for bins
  • Training for staff
  • Outreach materials, such as posters and flyers
  • Follow-up visits and technical assistance

Even now that the formal program has ended, Green Star and Anchorage Refuse are able to assist in setting up glass recycling and can offer technical assistance to businesses.

How does glass recycling benefit your business?

Recycling glass can help you to reduce your waste management costs. Diverting large quantities of glass from your trash dumpster may allow you to reduce the number of dumpsters you have or the number of times per week they are emptied. Glass pick-up service costs less than trash service, so if you can lessen the frequency of your trash service or reduce the number of dumpsters by recycling glass, you will save money.

How can you get involved?

If your business generates large quantities of glass, including container glass or plate glass, and you are interested in establishing glass recycling at your business, please contact Green Star or Anchorage Refuse.
