EK Industries, the current owner and operator of Anchorage’s glass recycling plant, is working hard to develop new markets to keep glass recycling viable in Anchorage. EK Industries has begun to develop landscaping and building products made of locally generated recycled glass. During a recent tour of its Post Road facility, owners showed off a variety of products including pavers of various shapes, sizes and colors, flooring underlayment products, and roofing tiles. These prototypes have been created to market the products on a larger scale, helping local architects and builders to meet LEED building criteria. Landscaping pavers The landscaping pavers are made with 70% recycled glass and 30% tinted concrete. They can be used in residential and commercial applications in sidewalks, walkways, crosswalks, retaining walls, and numerous other functional and decorative situations. Flooring underlayment Another product is called LevelGREEN. It is a recycled glass and gypsum mix used for a variety of underflooring applications. It can be used as a self-leveling base and it is lighter than traditional underlayment products. It can be made in varying levels of compressive strengths, ranging from 2000 to 4500 PSI. LevelGREEN R is a specifically formulated product for laying in-floor heating systems. As an underlayment for radiant flooring, LevelGREEN R’s thermal mass provides even heat distribution. Roofing tiles Another product being considered is roofing tiles made with glass. Roofing tiles made with glass have been popular in Europe for some time and may offer another option for fire resistant roofing products here in Anchorage. For more information about the development of these and other recycled glass products in Anchorage, contact EK Industries at 229-7090. ================================= The City of Anchorage is ready to begin retrofitting 16,000 roadway lights citywide. The initiative began this past Monday morning when the city started installing the first set of energy-efficient light fixtures at the intersection of Aero and Northern Lights Boulevard. The first phase calls for changing 4,200 roadway lights, about one fourth of the city's streetlights. The new lights are LEDs and they will cost $2.2 million. Once installed, however, the city says the lights will use 50 percent less energy than current fixtures. This means an estimated savings of $360,000 annually based on current rates. The city says it is joining other municipalities such as Ann Arbor, Mich.; Austin, Texas; and Raleigh, N.C., with this effort. ================================= This manual offers easy-to-read driving and vehicle maintenance tips, as well as links to help you calculate your driving impact.
