Green Star E-News
* Recycle Your Christmas Tree ================================== Welcome to our New December Enrollees!
Congratulations to New Awardees!
Thank You to this Year’s Individual Donors!
================================= Take the L.E.E.P. (Lighting Energy Efficiency Pledge) Green Star Award Standards Updated Plug@20 ================================= Give a gift to the environment this year and spruce up our public paths and gardens all summer long. ALPAR’s (Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling) Christmas Tree Recycling Program is back again this year and is currently accepting those dry and droopy Christmas trees at the Anchorage CARRS store parking lots until January 15th. Eagle River and Valley residents can take their trees to the Eagle River and Palmer CARRS. Recyclers are asked to look for the barriers and signs designating "Christmas Tree Recycling" and to leave bare trees only in these designated areas behind the barriers. Residents value being able to recycle their Christmas trees and give them new life, especially knowing that the wood chips from the trees are put to good use on community trails, paths and gardens. ”Recycling Christmas trees as well as all the other materials we can recycle, is a gift to the environment that keeps on giving,” says Mary Fisher, executive director of ALPAR. “A little extra effort to do more recycling at home would be a great New Year’s resolution!” All local CARRS stores (except Wasilla) will have clearly marked areas in their parking lots for the tree drop-off through Tuesday, January 15th. All lights, ornaments, tree stands and plastic bags must be removed from trees before they are dropped off. Wreathes are NOT accepted they can’t be recycled because of wires. The public is asked to help keep the sites clean and NOT leave any of these unacceptable items. The trees are recycled into wood chips and distributed to local non-profits and government agencies. Chips are used for trail cover, erosion control, and fragrant mulch for landscaping. Some of this year's recipients of the Christmas tree chips are the Boys and Girl Scout Camps, Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage, Anchorage Parks Department, Alaskan Sled Dog and Racing Association, and others. ALPAR estimates that more than 12,000 Christmas trees will be recycled this holiday season, saving valuable landfill space for materials that cannot currently be recycled. Boy Scout Troop 268 is available to pick up trees for a small donation. Call 868-8899. ALPAR, with support from CARRS and the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services, sponsors the Christmas Tree Recycling Program. Media sponsors are the Anchorage Daily News, Mix 103.1 and KBEAR 104.1 and GCI. ================================= The Muni’s Renewable Resource Manager recently started a recycling blog at www.adn.com/recycleblog. It is a great opportunity to comment on Anchorage’s new recycling programs. Feel free to submit questions, comments or suggestions about anything that has to do with recycling and sustainable living. We hope to make this a place for everyone to go to for information concerning recycling. ================================= Green Star is partnering with the U.S. EPA, the Renewable Energy Alaska Project, the Alaska Resource Development Council, the Nature Conservancy, and many more to present the Alaska Business Roundtable on Climate Change in conjunction with The Alaska Forum on the Environment. The Roundtable will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14th, 8am 4pm. The day is sure to be informational and inspirational with opening remarks from Mayor Mark Begich and a representative from Govenor Palin’s Climate Change Sub-Cabinet. Robert Correll, with the H. John Heinz Center for Science, will summarize the science behind climate change and Ken Baker, the Consulting Director, will share Vancouver’s efforts to green the 2010 Olympics! Green Star Awardees, Anchorage Neighborhood Health Center and Driven Auto Body, will highlight their experiences tracking carbon emissions and implementing pollution prevention initiatives right here in Anchorage. Other local businesses will discuss incorporating the purchase of carbon offsets into their business plan. The day will close with “Can Coal Be Clean?,” a presentation by Roger Wick with VP Anglo American. Registration information will soon be available at the Alaska Resource Development Council’s website, www.akrdc.org. Please check back if nothing is posted yet. ================================= Two recent Green Star enrollees will have no problem meeting the Green Star standard requiring reuse and recycling. Both Circular and Metro Retro offer products that are reused, recycled, refurbished, or otherwise “green.” Circular, a new eco-gift store, offers a broad range of eco-friendly and recycled products. It's located across the street from Nordstrom's in the 5th Avenue Mall (access is from 6th Avenue only). Circular carries home decor items made from sustainable wood, recycled glass and recycled aluminum; bamboo furnishings; bowls; CD holders; clocks and jewelry made from bicycle parts; organic cotton and bamboo clothing for men and women; organic cotton clothing and toiletries for children (much healthier because the cotton is grown without fertilizers and pesticides and the dyes are non-toxic); purses made from recycled tires, billboards, and pop tops; jewelry made from bottle caps, tin cans, and other recycled materials; beautiful pillows filled with Ingeo (literally "ingredients from the earth") and much more. For more information, call Kim at 907-274-2472 or kim@circularstore.com. Metro Retro also features reused items in the form of vintage clothing. Owner Cathy Alcorn started as a collector, acquiring vintage clothing and antique items from estate sales, the Internet and her habit of always keeping her eyes open wherever she went. Eventually she decided to share her collection first through a small shop in Wasilla but now in Anchorage shop located at 1233 W. 27th Ave. The store offers both men’s and women’s fashions from many different time periods. For more information, call 279-1007. ================================= Alaska Metal Recycling is one of Anchorage’s primary metals recyclers. With more and more people in Anchorage trying to do the right thing and recycle, questions often arise about what is accepted and what isn’t. In addition, Alaska Metal Recycling has experienced some changes since being purchased by Schnitzer Steel Industries. Here is some updated information about metal recycling in Anchorage. For details about each material and how to prepare it for recycling, visit Green Star at www.greenstarinc.org or call Alaska Metal Recycling at 349-4833. AMR will pay for: #1 prepared iron AMR will accept if prepared correctly: Appliances NOT accepted: Refrigerants The green “disposable” propane canisters can be recycled by a “ferrous metal” recycler (Alaska Metals Recycling in Anchorage) but they must be emptied by removing the pressure release valve. This can be accomplished with the same tool that removes valve stem cores from tires. The landfill and transfer station will also take them at their Hazmat site. ================================= Are you interested in any of these items that were posted in December?
