REMINDERS
Green Star Award Application Deadline
The next quarterly deadline for submitting your Green Star Award Achievement Report is Monday, December 31st. This is the last quarter that organizations will be able to submit a report based on the old Standards. Starting January 1, 2008, only the new standards, which include two new Air Quality Standards, will be accepted. Visit www.greenstarinc.org/GSAward.php for a copy of the revised Standards.
Take the L.E.E.P. (Lighting Energy Efficiency Pledge)
Anchorage businesses are encouraged to take the L.E.E.P. toward energy savings by pledging to upgrade inefficient lighting. Simply count your inefficient lights, and submit the data to Green Star either on a hard copy pledge form or online. Green Star will calculate your savings and connect you with resources to make the changes you’ve pledged. The next step is to retrofit your lighting and reap the benefits of the energy and cost savings, as well as the reduced carbon emissions. If you rent your workspace, Green Star can help you convince your building owner of manager to retrofit your lighting by sending them a letter that states the potential savings. Visit www.greenstarinc.org for more information about the L.E.E.P. program and to calculate what your savings could be.
Take The Air Quality Survey and Win A Car Care Kit
Congratulations to Carl Gysler who won the first drawing for taking the short online survey about your commute and vehicle maintenance habits. One more car care kit is available for anyone taking the survey in the month of December, so log on now! The survey consists of nine questions and takes about five minutes to complete. Once you complete the survey, you’ll be entered to win the car care kit. One entry per individual please. Deadline for taking the survey is December 31st, 2007. HELP GREEN STAR KEEP OUR AIR CLEAN!

GLASS RECYCLING IN FULL SWING AGAIN
Anchorage’s glass recycling plant has resumed full production and is again accepting glass from Anchorage’s community glass recycling drop-offs and commercial businesses. The plant, previously owned by Polar Supply, stopped taking new glass last February and began looking for a new operator.
New owners, EK Industries, finalized purchase of the plant in July and made a number of repairs and improvements to equipment. They are working to develop additional product lines for the recycled glass, including terrazzo flooring and floor underlayment for in-floor heating systems, and will continue to produce sandblasting medium and traction sand.
“Anchorage recyclers, businesses and builders are closing the recycling loop by diverting their glass to the recycling stream and buying “green” recycled glass products, especially those manufactured locally,” says Mary Fisher, executive director of Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling. “It’s a win-win that saves landfill space and creates local jobs.”
ALPAR, Green Star and the Municipality of Anchorage have all contributed to helping glass recycling remain viable in Anchorage through marketing assistance, technical and grant support and maintaining the free community drop-off system.
Drop-off bins for all colors of clean container glass (bottles and jars) are located at the Smurfit-Stone Recycling Center off Dowling Road, the Anchorage Landfill on Hiland Drive, Northway Mall behind CARRS, and at the Brown Jug Warehouse on Old Seward. Alaska Waste provides dumpster service for glass recycling to commercial businesses, restaurants and bars.

ALASKA ENERGY SAVERS AND MINI BRUTE DONATE SERVICES
The Anchorage Curling Club thanks Alaska Energy Savers and Mini Brute Service Co. for donating a lighting retrofit for the Anchorage Curling Club’s building on Government Hill.
The donation of $4,440 is estimated to save the club about $8,700 annually in electricity bills. Since the curling club is a nonprofit organization, this savings is a boost to the budget.
"The increased and even lighting has improved visibility and reduced annoying shadows. The Anchorage Curling Club appreciates this donation very much," says one club member.
