Welcome Cartridge Connection, Green Star’s newest enrollee. Cartridge Connection is a local company that sells new and used toner cartridges. All used cartridges are remanufactured on-site. The company also repairs copiers, fax machines and all types of printers.

Green Star’s Green Events continues to be popular with summer events. This month, the following events feature recycling opportunities:

Chugach Day (August 6 – Cooper Landing)
Alaska Renewable Energy Fair (August 13 – Delaney Park Strip)
Alaska State Fair (August 25 to Sept. 5 -- Palmer)

EARN YOUR GREEN STAR AWARD

Now is an excellent time to submit your Green Star Award application. As we mentioned in last month’s issue, we have just introduced new Standards, which should simplify the process. The next submittal deadline is September 30th, giving you two months to pull everything together. Please contact us at 278-7827 or info@greenstarinc.org if you have any questions about the process or need any assistance.

Successful Exchanges:

* When Green Star moved its office last August, it needed to upgrade its phone system and add lines. At the same time, Sierra Club also moved offices and could no longer use its old phones. Sierra Club posted its old phone on AME and Green Star saved an estimated $1700 by reusing the Sierra Club’s old system.

* While working on the finishing touches to the web-based AME system, Green Star’s web consultant found a listing offering used plastic barrels. Just the day before, he had been visiting the site of a local non-profit recreational club and seen that they needed plastic barrels to build a dock. Another successful AME match was made!

ALASKA RENEWABLE ENERGY FAIR – August 13

The first Alaska Renewable Energy Fair is Saturday, August 13th, from noon until 10pm on the Anchorage Park Strip. Workshops at the fair will highlight Fire Island’s wind power, geothermal, biofuels, energy efficiency, hydrogen for transportation, residential systems, green building, landfill gas recovery, climate change, and tidal power.

Featured speakers include Randy Udall, head of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency in Aspen, Colorado, and Angus Duncan, President and CEO of Bonneville Environmental Foundation in Portland, Oregon.

The fair also will include films, information booths, solar and wind energy demonstrations, food and craft booths, live music and more. Music by The Whipsaws, The Emeralds, Jared Woods, Los Gringos Al Mundo, Spiff, and Elite 9.

If you are interested in volunteering at the event, please contact Hannah Manser at 317-2050 or Hannah_manser@hotmail.com.

ALASKA STATE FAIR VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED

We have several shifts still available to help recycle at the Alaska State Fair and we need to fill them soon!

Green Star is working with the Alaska State Fair and Valley Community for Recycling Solutions for a fourth year to make recycling a big part of the Fair. Last year, 220 volunteers helped divert more than 16 tons of recyclables from the landfill.

This year’s Fair dates are Thursday, August 24th, through Monday, September 5th. About 250 volunteers are needed to fill two 4-hour shifts each day. Green Star encourages groups of 10 to 15 people to sign up. Fair recycling is a wonderful opportunity for scout groups, church groups, youth groups, and even groups of co-workers to enjoy an afternoon together working on a community project. Individual volunteers also are welcome.

Many organizations and groups sign up every year for this event. Volunteers receive free admission to the Fair and free parking for up to three vehicles per group.

For information about available shift times and dates, please contact Green Star at 278-7839 or Jeanne@greenstarinc.org or visit http://www.greenstarinc.org/statefair2005.php.

AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM TO CREATE RECYCLED ART

ReCreation is a new after-school program at Congregation Beth Sholom, starting in Fall 2005, that combines arts, recycling and community service. The program will use donated or recycled materials to learn about various handcrafts and art techniques and to provide beautifully crafted work to local charities. The public is invited to donate new, old, or gently used art and craft supplies for use by the program. No such reuse program in Anchorage exists and items such as fabric, yarn, boxes, crayons, and markers have already been donated. Children of any denomination are invited to enroll in the after-school program. Contact Tara Karnes Witterholt at 248-8272 or tscriber@alaska.com for more information. The program will be held at 7525 East Northern Lights Blvd.

SAVE THE DATE FOR BIONEERS

The 2nd annual Bioneers in Alaska conference will be held on the UAA campus on October 13-16, 2005. A diverse group of Alaskans are again hosting, via satellite, the plenary speakers from the 16th annual national Bioneers Conference. In addition to the "virtual" plenary sessions, local organizers will offer more than 20 local workshops. Workshop topics include sustainable energy systems, the future of the Alaskan economy, ecological design, holistic health care, healing racism, safe food, and many more.

The annual Bioneers Conference has been held in California since 1990, and assembles a unique cross-cultural and global gathering of "biological pioneers." These Bioneers lead the development of practical environmental solutions and innovative social strategies for restoring our communities and the ecosystems.

Bioneers in Alaska: Creating Sustainable Communities follows the Bioneers tradition of highlighting the good news by celebrating Alaskan success stories in the areas of ecological restoration, social justice, and health.

For more information or to register, visit http://www.sustainak.org/akbioneers, write to info@sustainak.org, or call 907-373-0909 or 334-9630 in Anchorage.

MULTI-TENANT BUILDING-WIDE RECYCLING: WOULD YOU LIKE TO PARTICIPATE?

Green Star has received a grant from the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services to look into the cost savings and benefits of establishing building-wide waste reduction and recycling in small- to medium-sized office buildings with multiple tenants.

We are currently looking for interested individuals or businesses that work out of multi-tenant buildings to participate in this program. A small stipend is available to help contribute to these efforts. Green Star is hoping to demonstrate that an integrated waste reduction and recycling program can actually reduce solid waste disposal costs for property managers, make recycling services more affordable for tenants, and encourage greater participation from the business community. Increased recycling and pollution prevention practices by businesses will in turn reduce the amount of waste generated, and divert a greater amount of recyclable material from the Anchorage Regional Landfill.

If you are interested or know of a business or property manager who may be willing to participate, please contact Beth Verrelli at 278-7827 or at beth@greenstarinc.org

THIS MONTH’S HOT LINK: Renewable Energy Alaska Project (REAP)

REAP’s new web site provides details about the upcoming Renewable Energy Fair, including the workshop/presentation schedule, background information about featured speakers and their organizations, and the music schedule. REAP’s web site will soon be expanded to include a map of Alaska’s renewable energy resources, among other things. Check back as more information is added.
