SHINING STARS

Green Star would like to thank everyone who donated to our move across town. Thank you to ConocoPhillips for furniture and office equipment. Thank you to the Denali Commission for office cubicles. Thank you to Air Van Moving Group for their moving assistance.

UPCOMING GREEN STAR EDUCATIONAL SERIES TOPICS

Our August Green Star Educational Seminar will be Wednesday, August 18th, 11:45am – 1pm at the BP Energy Center. The topic will be Recycling it Right: In the Office & Home. Have you figured out the basics but are still confused by a few of the tricky materials? Are you stuck on how to organize recycling in your office? Join us and we’ll explain what plastics are recyclable in Anchorage and why, the differences between cardboard and paperboard, whether your office or home is really collecting office paper or mixed paper, and the importance of proper sorting. We’ll also discuss some less common recyclables like tires, electronics, running shoes, eyeglasses, fluorescent lamps and others. Bring your specific recycling questions. This seminar will address both home and office recycling. Please RSVP to 278-7827 or info@greenstarinc.org.

Our October event, a Sustainable Design and Materials Fair, will be held on Monday, October 4th at the BP Energy Center. The event, held in conjunction with the Alaska Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, will include at least one speaker at noon and numerous vendors who will share information throughout the afternoon and evening about sustainable building materials that are available in Anchorage. Many of us, whether it is for a work project or a home remodel or update, have researched the numerous “green” products on the market. However, we often find that products may be unavailable or prohibitively expensive in Alaska. This event will showcase many of the products that are available here. More details on the event will be provided in next month’s E-News.

==================================
STATE FAIR RECYCLING VOLUNTEER NEEDS

The Fair is approaching quickly so plan to help out while enjoying a day at the Fair. Groups working just one four-hour shift receive free admission for the rest of that day, plus free parking. Several full shifts are still available. Specifically, groups are needed for Sunday, September 5th, 5-9pm and Monday, September 6th, 5-9pm. Individuals are needed for a variety of shifts. There is a sign-up sheet on the web at www.greenstarinc.org/2004statefair.php. Or call 278-7839 for more information.

==================================
GREEN STAR HAS MOVED!

As of August 1st, our new address is 880 H Street, Suite 106, Anchorage, AK 99501. The office is located between Skinny Raven and the Park Strip on the corner of H St. and 9th Ave. All phone and fax numbers remain the same.

==================================
RECYCLE FOR THE ANIMALS

You can recycle and help the animals too. Drop off aluminum cans at the Anchorage Animal Care & Control Center at 4711 South Bragaw Street and support Friends of Pets programs. There is a collection bin behind the Center. Plastic newspaper sleeves for poop pickups can be given directly to Friends of Pets. Call Michelle at 333-9534 for information about where to drop off bags.

Animal Control also can use old newspaper and shredded paper (strips, not confetti) for animal bedding. They can even arrange shredding of some materials. Call 343-8252 for more information.

THIS MONTH’S HOT LINK: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycleanchorage

The Freecycle Network (http://www.freecycle.org) is a grassroots movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Numerous communities across the country, including Anchorage and other Alaska towns, have their own trading system through the Freecycle Network so check out what’s available locally or post your stuff.
