Green Star Awardee Success Stories Sierra Club, Alaska Field Office
Sierra Club received its Green Star Award on July 17, 2006. Randy Virgin, Executive Director of the Alaska Center for the Environment, presented the award to fellow conservation organization Sierra Club. A grassroots organization with an active presence in Alaska for the last 35 years, the Sierra Club is known for its efforts to protect and restore the natural environment and to encourage the enjoyment of wild places on earth. In support of this mission, the Anchorage Office has instituted a wide variety of initiatives to minimize its environmental footprint. These range from eliminating waste at the source through energy conservation and environmentally preferable purchasing to ensuring that any waste that is generated is reused, recycled or disposed of properly. In addition to recycling all the typical waste from an office setting, staff has gone a step beyond and is now composting all plant clippings, coffee grounds, and food waste from the office kitchen. On a national level, the Sierra Club has launched a campaign entitled “Cool Cities” that is encouraging communities across the country to operate cleaner vehicles, improve energy efficiency, and explore and implement renewable energy opportunities. |
