Green Business Success Story
The Alaska Support Industry Alliance has not only received its own Green Star Award, but the organization coordinates the Arctic Green Star Chapter on the North Slope. Founded in 1979, The Alliance is a 501(c)(6) non-profit statewide trade association representing more than 400 businesses, organizations and individuals that derive their livelihood from providing products and services to oil, gas and other natural resource exploration and development. The Alliance is made up of oilfield service companies, transportation enterprises, wholesale and retail businesses, professional firms and private citizens. The groups mission is to promote responsible, safe, and environmentally sound exploration and development of oil and gas and mineral resources for the well being of all Alaskans.
As part of this mission, the Alliance has incorporated numerous waste prevention, pollution prevention, and energy conservation measures into its own daily practices. The latest Alliance initiatives include purchasing blue recycling bins to place at each staff members desk. This has dramatically increased the amount of paper being recycled.
The Alliance recently began purchasing recycled toner cartridges from Bhree-Cycle It. Used toner cartridges are then exchanged for discounted replacements. Savings from recycling toner cartridges and buying recycled cartridges for the Alliances two printers and the fax machine totaled more than $700 last year.
The Alliance has taken several steps to reduce energy use as well. Fans are used in the office for greater circulation efficiency. Building overheating is controlled this way, rather than with energy-sucking air conditioning. Staff also programmed the copier to shut off at 6 pm and restart at 8 am. Since copier shut-down no longer is reliant on staff remembering to do it, the action has saved energy.
The Alliance works hard to ensure that new employees are familiar with the Green Star philosophy. New employees are required to read various publications on-line about the Alliance and its programs. This includes information about Green Star. New employees also are introduced to the Arctic Green Star Chapter by attending a meeting of the PBEA on the North Slope.
