American Lung Association of Alaska received its Green Star Award on August 21, 2006. Founded in 1934, the American Lung Association of Alaska was a primary force in winning the battle against the tuberculosis epidemic. They now work daily to reduce tobacco addiction, improve air quality, and fight asthma and other lung diseases. Through health education, training, media campaigns and policy work, the American Lung Association serves thousands of Alaskans every year.
Taking the Green Star steps to minimize waste, and maximize the health benefits of their organizations through recycling, reuse, and the purchase of environmentally preferable products was not difficult given the organization's policy to improve environmental quality through wise business decisions.
Additionally, the organization has taken numerous steps to reduce air pollution. In line with its special mission of preventing lung disease and promoting lung health, alternative transportation and flex-time by employees is encouraged, trip reduction strategies have been implemented, and the purchase Energy Star office equipment is emphasized.
American Lung Association of Alaska has been educating and involving staff, along with its customer base, in its Green Star efforts. As part of these efforts, American Lung established a lending library -- available to employees and customers -- on waste reduction, indoor air quality, pollution prevention, recycling and energy efficiency topics.
